Question HPT370 & Debian 3.0R1 install confusion

Hey all, I've found lots of posts about this from google, etc... but none that really make sense to me. Bear with me as I'm still learning Linux.

Posted this on the beginners forum, but got no replies so I figured that this might be the more appropriate forum.

Basically, got the standard ABIT kt7 board with the HPT370 RAID controller, was looking to install Debian 3.0R1 on this machine. Two 20gig drives that I want set up in RAID 1 mirroring.

I first hoped it would just pick up the drives, but no luck there. So I grabbed the linux drivers from Highpoint, put them on a floppy and told Debian to load the external modules from a floppy. It looked on the floppy gave me one choice of an HPT file, I selected it and it then it said the load failed, then went back to the normal "No Harddrives found" message.

Now the only walkthrough for this I've found is here:

and that is approximately 8000 miles over my head, and seems like a lot of legwork for something I would think would pretty cut and dry.

Could someone help me out? I'm an old hat with a Windows enviroment and I figured this would be similiar to the NT install where if you have an unsupported SCSI driver you just give it a driver disk on the install and then away you go.

Thanks in advance all,
