Question HP SureStore DAT24x6 --> Tape Backup Question

Hello everyone.

I will get right to the point. We just purchased an HP SureStore DAT24x6 autotape loader to due our backing up. We are connecting it to our Samba server and it will be backing up all of our data on our network.

I have already installed the SCSI and so far, everything is good to go.

But, my question lies within in the backup software. HP has a CD that comes with the Driver and software, but it does not have a driver for Linux. (We are using RH 8.0)

Does anyone know if and where I might be able to find some software to utilize our tape backup system? Is there a generic software I can use, or does anyone know if HP has something I might be able to use.

Thanks

Tarballed

No special drivers needed since its SCSI. The tape utilities mt will let you exercise the tape drive. Your tape device will be /dev/st0 which will rewind the tape after a command or /dev/nst0 which will not rewind the tape after a command. Not sure what commands are for the autoloader

mt -f /dev/st0 status ( prints status of device)

Check with linux applications sites like wwwlinuxapps.com or www.freshmeat.net for backup software.

You can use tar for generic backup software.
Example.

tar -cvf /dev/st0 /home/username (backups users home directory)

To restore
tar -xvf /dev/st0 (restores to current directory)

Thanks, I appreciate your reply.
I have been working diligently on this, trying to figure out what would be the best route to go.

Just a few more quick questions.

Red Hat 8.0 detected the SCSI card upon boot and kudzo configured it per my request.

My question is, how can I check on the status/details of the scsi card? When I check the hardware browser, it does come up in the SCSI category.

I am just trying to be very thorough and making sure I can make this as clean as possible.

Also, I have been thinking on the following software to use with the autoloader:

amanda
tapeware http://www.tapeware.com

Thanks again.

Both programs should work fine. You can check to see if the SCSI module is loading using lsmod. The module will be the same as shown in the hardware browser. Using the mt command will verify that everything is working.
