HP Scanjet g3010 - can it be set up on linux ?

Hi, my girlfriend's father just bought this particular scanner model along with a Samsung printer and a laptop (all for use in the work offices). I'm supposed to set up linux on that same laptop and naturally it should be able to work with the scanner and printer.

The printer is a Samsung CLP-300 which provides it's own linux drivers so that won't be an issue (although i tried to install them on openSUSE 10.3 and got some silly error (related to libgnomebreakpad.so) but more on that later, if necessary)

The problem here is the scanner. I guess it's pretty new since Yast doesn't even list it in it's "list of all existent scanner models, supported or not". I've tried loading some other HP drivers (with yast) to see if they could work but none detected the scanner. Haven't tried all though, is there a particular scanner that this one is similar enough to to use it's drivers ? Note that the distro doesn't have to be openSUSE (most likely it won't be since my girlfriend is pretty stubborn about Ubuntu)

BTW, I did some research, googling and found nothing. A google/linux search on the term g3010 gives no results in English. So, could it somehow be done ? I would very much like to spare them the headaches of windows !

EDIT: I just tried the SANE search engine and it says basic functionality is provided with the hp3900 backend....how would i go about setting this up ? I've never even used scanners before....

hiya, I have the same problem. Installed SANE but no joy. The scanner kind of buzzes when I start graphics programs but there is no scanning device detected.

anyone?

yours,

Erik

An HP scanner might be supported by hplip. Look in the homesite's HCL: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/
