Well, my printer runs intermittently if I uninstall and then reinstall hplip each time it does not want to print.
Now I have made another discovery. When I try to print off the Ubuntu 20.04 live dvd printing is not an issue. So, where do I find the package information that comes on the live dvd? I want to compare it to what I am running.

Any difference in hplip version (between live and installed)? USB-connected or network-connected printer?

I am currently searching for the method of reinstalling hplip from the live dvd. I think I need to not only reinstall hplip but also the packages that it depends on (libraries?). Can you shed any light on this?

I've read all the postings about setup and such for my HPW102 laserjet, but no joy. Cant run or install hpsetup. Printer shows on Admin menu, but with the cursed yellow ! Printer worked fine for months, but since I tried to change to a new cartridge it's been in a complete denial. Switched back to the original cartridge, but still no joy. I've tried everything I can think of or find on the web, but still no fun of any kind. I'd buy a new printer, but I'm afraid that won't work, either. Previously, this one worked on direct USB connection from my desk, and even with wi-fi from my laptop. I'll try anything at this point.
tnx, ps

@snidey: You're best advised to start your own thread for assistance, rather than tacking on to an existing thread like this. Include as much definitive information as possible (including distro and version), so that others are not left to speculate.

The hpsetup command is from the hplip and hplip-gui packages. Install both then it should work

Just thought I would post an update to my printer problems.
I have been living without print capability all this time. When I want to print I go to a live DVD. A real nice way to have to live.
Today I decided to try AGAIN to figure this out. I was reading my old posts and I googled "printer won't work with ubuntu 20.04" to see if there were any posts that I had forgotten. In this search I stumbled on a thread I never saw before (I don't think)
Code:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1233521/printer-problems-after-installing-ubuntu-20-04
I this thread it is stated
Code:
If the printer was working for you with hplip before, just uninstall ippusbxd package:
sudo apt remove ippusbxd
The problem, at least in my case, was that ippusbxd was automatically creating a printer that was not working and was conflicting with my hplip printer.
I removed this package and rebooted and the printer works perfectly.

I did not ever see mentioned that you were connected by USB.
There was a version of ippusb that broke communications with printers connected by USB when they were using the manufacturers drivers to operate the printer. It effectively created an ipp connection to the usb port that blocked the drivers.
Fedora very quickly removed that package but those who had already installed it were hit similar to your issue.
Glad to see it is now solved.
