HP Photosmart C5280 Scanning issues!

First of all, I'm using Fedora Core 6 (Zod, apparently, quite an unsettling name for an O/S) and uname -r gives this: "2.6.22.9-61.fc6"

i just got a USB printer/scanner all in one thing. It's light years ahead of me, our last printer was just a laser printer, the likes of which i have been familiar with since high school.

Anyway, this new piece of technology has been okay so far. I haven't tried the memory card slot things at the front yet (because the bloody camera's lost) but it printed the test page fine when i put in the ink boxes, and printed a page okay when i printed a PDF. now. i installed a bunch of stuff (as they say) to try and get the scanner part going. i installed sane, xsane, hplip, hpoj, xsane and some other stuff. When i run xsane, i get this in a diag box:

No devices available <Close> <Help>

If i click "Help", then i get six helpful reasons for failure, two of which i don't understand, one of which is definitely not the case, two that are very unlikely in my opinion and one that's dumb.

It's definitely there when i do /sbin/lsusb :
Code:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 03f0:5d11 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0644:0000 TEAC Corp. Floppy
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:a700 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 058f:6390 Alcor Micro Corp.
I googled and found many people using different versions of linux using similar printers/scanners having similar issues. I don't understand the whole concept, never having installed or configured a scanner before, and i have no idea which things might be distro specific, or even just bad advice, as a result. Have a look at some of my fumbling around before i got frustrated and came here:

[root@harvey ~]# hpssd
-bash: hpssd: command not found
i found a page (which i now can't find again) on sourceforge with an installer and a tarball, but i would rather not install stuff if i don't have too, non-rpms at least.

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance......

Hi Calum, According to this you need at least version 2.7.6 for support. I'd upgrade the hplip package.
Good luck. ;-)

yes, well. the one i've got is the latest one to come down using apt, so you'd hope it'd be alright. it's this version though:

Code:
[calum@harvey ~]$ rpm -qa hplip
hplip-1.7.4a-3.fc6
anyway, i downloaded the dodgy looking self-extracting installer from that page and when run (with `sh ./hplip-2.7.10.run` or `bash ./hplip-2.7.10.run`), as either a normal user or root, here's the result:

Code:
Creating directory hplip-2.7.10
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing HPLIP 2.7.10 Self Extracting

should i just try running some things from the extracted directory? like configure perhaps?

You may want to try an rpm, there are several newer versions here.
Good luck. ;-)
