I've just installed RedHat Linux 9 on a second HD on my new HP Pavilion PC. It comes with an internal modem that works fine under Windows XP, but Linux fails to detect it. I went through a RedHat "add hardware wizard" with no success, trying several different values for the port (eg. ttys1, ttyi1, etc.).

Has anyone had success with an HP internal modem? Are internal modems a problem in Linux? Perhaps there is an internal modem HOWTO somewhere?

Probably a winmodem. Your info is not enough to tell which one, and I certainly wouldn't have any clues about the HP Pavillion off the top of my head.

I'm sorry but I don't know if it a WinModem or not, but I know enough to know that I'm screwed if it is. But I can tell you that Windows XP calls it a "Conexant HSF V90 56K PCI Modem", attached to COM3 (even though it is internal- this seems a little strage to me, but I'm just a beginner).

the Conexant HSF modems are indeed WinModems...

I've also got an (older!) HP Pavilion and it came fitted with a winmodem (I can't remember if it was a Conexant or not)..

the best option would be to simply go out and buy a pukka hardware modem - preferably an external, serial device; that way you can guarantee that it really will be a hardware model. then simply plug into a spare serial port, and away you go.

if this is absolutely not possible, then i have a nagging feeling that there is a linux driver for the conexant chipset, which you might try. however, i tried a so-called driver for the winmodem in my box, and it was frankly appalling - very crash-prone...
