My wife and I are running Hardy Heron. The printer is connected to her computer. Now I've been at this for hours and for the life of me I cannot get to it.
I've tried Cups-Manager, Internet and the normal way as well thru the System Menu option (Printing).
Ive used HPJet Direct, IPP and nothing. Now if I go to the Browser and do it, via http://192.168.1.100:631/ and it works, BUT NOT from my computer.
Anyone have any ideas. Im totally at a loss and I think I'm reasonably astute since Ive done tech support for over 20yrs.

"the Browser"? Whose browser, yours or wife's?
"Do it"? Do what?
"and it works"? What works? The browser works, or the printer works?
What is at http://192.168.1.100:631/ ?

Some pointers:

/etc/cups/cupsd.conf on her computer needs to be set up to share the printer over your LAN. The file is well-commented. Then cups needs a restart.

You then need to add the printer to your PCs configuration:
Printers - Admin mode - Add printer

The URI of the printer will be something like ipp://wife:631/printers/HPJetDirect, but IIRC you can get the cups wizard to scan your LAN looking for printers to connect to. You want the one that is at wife's IP address.

Do not configure a printer driver on your PC (all this is handled by wife's PC) - just set the Printer type as RAW.

Then you should be done.

OK,. perhaps i wasnt quite clear.. I bring up my browser and go to http://192.168.1.100:631/ which brings up Cups manager. If I Print Test Page it works. If I try it from my computer via Printing from the System Menu item, it doesnt, says, Printer is not accessible.

I'm taking it that 192.168.1.100 is wife's computer.

The (?)ubuntus do not use http://localhost:631 to configure the printer(s).

You need to go to System - Printers - Admin mode - Add printer as I put in my last post. So please re-read that post.

Um, the 192.168 address group is one of the three address families which are not permitted to cross a network switch. So, if you're trying to access your wife's computer through a network switch (a "router" of some kind), the connection will not be made. In that case, you should not be too surprised if you can't access the printer connected to her system.

I used the IP address as a last resort.
As an aside; this used to work, just stopped. I know it sounds idiotic, but, thats what happened.
I went to System, Printing, Add printer
I used ipp, jet direct, you name it. it will not work. the printer is not accessible is the message.
Both computers in the SERVERS section of Printing have everything checked.
When it did work, there was a
Remote Printers section
and thats where the printer im trying to add showed up before. Now when I add a printer it only shows up in the Local Printers section.
Ill admit this should be a no brainer, but it appears that either my brain is non-functioning or the computer is nuts.

This is how to do it:
Check that the printer is plugged into Wife, Wife has cups running, Wife is prepared to share the printer (see Wife:/etc/cups/cupsd.conf)
Mouse to System, PrintingSystem
Click the button for Administrator Mode (And supply your password).
Add... Printer/Calss
Wizard starts
Next
"Backend Selection"
Select[*] Remote cups server
Next
"User Identification"
Anonymous
Next
"Remote IPP Server"
Host: Wife (or LAN IP address of Wife)
Port: 631
Next
"Remote IPP Printer Selection"
Choose your printer by clicking it.
Next
"Printer Model Selection"
Just click[*] Raw printer (No driver needed)

Next
Next
No Banner
Next
No Quota
Next
"Users Access Settings"
make no changes (leave blank)
Next
"General information"
Name the printer
Next
Finish

Right Click the printer now it is on your list.
Set As Default
Shut the "Printers System Settings" Window.

You are done

The above is for KDE, I expect gnome will be very similar.

Ive given up for the day. I installed KDE and the printer setup is identically the same..
When I clicked on New Class and pressed Forward, only PDF was there.
I installed KDE and the same thing.
I was gonna Install KDE4 but the Internet is a bit slow (Cable) so ill do it tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help and i do hope that tomorrow everything works out. Its just frustrating that one day the printer works the next its gone. No rhyme or reason.

Well I got it working. Seems that my wifes computer had SSH running on it. I disabled it and rebooted her computer. I did:
ps -ef |grep ssh
there were 2 lines, so i killed the SSH one that was a seahorse-agent and wham, her computer logged off. I logged on and no SSH.
All of a sudden on my computer the printer shows up and its working.
That was accomplished thru ipp.
So i may be somewhat of a dufus, but i got it working.
