Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

HP Mini 2140 on CentOS or RHEL 5.2

Greetings!
I am attempting to get the wired LAN Ethernet adapter to work on an HP Mini 2140 Netbook running CentOS or RHEL 5.3 with kernel-2.6.18. I have run Fedora 10 via Live USB with kernel 2.6.26 or .27 and the Ethernet adapter worked without extra effort. If memory serves, the sky2 driver provided with kernel 2.6.26 worked without effort.

Ironically, I have the wireless working already via the STA driver, using a the wl module compiled from source.

Does anybody have a trick for getting the sky2 driver to recognize the Ethernet adapter in a HP Mini 2140 running kernel 2.6.18? Or is the only answer going to be "use a distribution with a later kernel?" What about rebuilding the srpm for the 2.6.26 kernel and retrofitting it into CentOS or RHEL 5.3? Horrible idea?

Thanks in advance.
