When I send something to print. Error message "3.19.12 (Linux Mint 19.3):Plugin installation failed.
A stupid question, how do I uninstall hplip 3.19.12?
Thanks
Hplip is a package, which goes out in the appropriate manner for your distro. May I remind you of this
Code:
Bottom line is:
You need a version of M$ windows to give that heap an IP. You might manage a usb cable setup, but you might not.
which was learned the hard way. I realised I was being obstinate. I think you're avoiding rearranging your desk or cables.
I installed hplip 3.20.11 using run The printer is listed as fully supported and according to the HPLIP, no plugin is required. Yet set-up now says that the printer is not supported. If I remember correctly, printing was straight out of the box with Mint 19.3 even without hplip. So ferrari's suggestion to run the 'hp-doctor' command returned "not found, but can be installed with sudo apt install hplip".
If I select 'Add printer' from System Settings, HP LaserJet Professional P1102w was there for selection and can be added. It was shown as connected to localhost. However, it can't 'Print Test Page' but is "Processing- Sending data to printer" in CUPS. Any ideas??
Remove all printer definitions for that printer in the system settings panel
Reboot
Use hp-setup to define the printer and print a test page
Should work.
The bottom line is that setup for printers in cups and in hplip use different .ppd files and that does not often work. The one that is installed with hplip is the most reliable for HP printers.

Yes, I've already told you that won't work if using the generic CUPS usb backend (as the URI you've posted already shows). It needs to be using the HPLIP 'hp' backend, and of course as has already been mentioned, selection of the appropriate 'driver' reflects the ppd chosen, which is then added to /etc/cups/ppd/.
As we've already mentioned, 'hp-setup' is the config utility to to use. The 'hp-doctor'
utility should be able to help identify the underlying problem with the HPLIP environment.

I told you. Use M$ windows and the install cd. THEN set up linux.

What does that have to do with getting a printer set up in linux?.
The OP said that he can see and print to it from windows. The install CD only works in and for windows anyway and has nothing to do with the setup in linux. The printer gets its IP from dhcp or manually configured so windows is immaterial for that.
Plus, he said it already has the IP you seem determined to focus on. Yes, he needs to know the IP if hplip has a problem in finding it automatically (I sometimes have that) because you can tell hp-setup where to find it, but the proper approach is to focus on what needs done and not go off on a tangent with a totally different OS.

The information supplied by the OP to date suggests a USB-connected printer. If trying to detect on the network, firewalling might be preventing discovery.

Yes, exactly ....and hence all my subsequent replies.

However all his posts to date indicate a reluctance to wipe out the cups config for the printer and go with the hplip and hp-setup config.
Agreed. However, one concerning fact is that running the hp backend manually should have caused the printer to be reported (and for some reason yet to be determined it didn't).

That sucky printer is congenitally incapable of setting an IP except using the driver on the install disk under windows. I know. I had one. Hp-setup & hplip python scripts don't do it, and nobody at hplip cares. I went through a Megathread like this one, and had to resort to windows. I said all this in post #6. I think it might be possible to get it printing on the other end of a usb cable, but not on wifi. Your install procedure is:
1. Set an IP under windows.
2. Run hp-setup <IP> & follow the prompts.
Thanks to all who have replied to my post. However, I still cannot print even after installing the latest hplip-3.20.11.
Plugin was successfully downloaded during but upon running hp-setup the printer cannot be discovered at all. Previously added printer in CUPS have all been deleted prior to running hplip. The printer was listed under 'Manage Printers' automatically after hplip install.
'lpinfo -v' showed that the printer's connection is "direct usb". On the System Settings\Printers, it showed as "connected to local host". But why does hp-setup failed to discover the printer which is plugged in to USB? I went into System Settings\Printers\Properties to change the Device URI to USB but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Test Page job was stuck at "Processing - rendering complete". It never printed.
What have I done wrong? I'm just a novice and am at wit's end. Any help to get the printer to print would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
Now, after some further searching, I recalled that "HP Smart Install" could prevent device detection and configuration. Here's one of several threads on the subject
However, I'm not sure that SmartInstallDisable-Tool.run is available any longer. You may be better to disable this 'feature' via a Windows host if you can. Then you should be able to proceed with configuring using 'hp-setup'
