Dells
Unfortunately most of the Dells I find on Amazon don't say much of anything about their graphics cards. I do love that they all still seem to come with CD/DVD drives. And I have been told that Dell is a supporter of Linux.

Yeah?
Uhhhh NO!
Dell has a habit of setting the bios so you have to turn off raid for the drive before linux can even see the disk.
AFAIK most everything else is OK but I try to stay away from them.
My vote goes to Asus (see my sig below). Really good hardware and seamless install and use on the last 3 I have owned.

Eh, Dells work EXTREMELY well if you stick to their business lineups (Latitude/Precision). If you get into the Inspirons, that's when you risk running into lots of issues. Lenovo same thing, stick with the Thinkpad and they're fantastic, journey into the Yoga/Ideapads and you may find yourself with issues. In my experience, it's also the same with HP. Stick to the Elitebooks, and they're usually fine (my personal issues with my old Elitebook 1020 G1 touchpad being the worst touchpad I've ever used in any OS excepted). What little experience I have with Acer has been fine (build quality not included), MSI as well. Asus has been fine with what little I've owned of theirs as well (again, build quality excepted).

Thanks again everyone, Sam's was out of the HP and after reading a review on Amazon about the Asus I was looking at I found out it overheats really quickly. I don't think this is an Inspiron, what fo you make of this one?

That is an Inspiron. Inspiron 3000 series 17 inch.
The screen is UTTER, COMPLETE, TOTAL TRASH. 1600x900 in a 17" is EXTREMELY low DPI. Everything will look grainy and ugly with each pixel being large enough to easily see due to the low resolution.

I agree with Timothy Miller. My Asus 17" laptop has 1920x1080 resolution on the primary screen and will run an external with at least 1920x1080 as well. That one would not be acceptable to most people for display resolution.

The previous laptops I was looking at have all fell through for one reason or another. What are your options on this one? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BRFQ4CC...ing=UTF8&psc=1
Here's what I'm looking for:
HDD/SSD: as long as I can install my own SSD I'll be good.
Memory: 6+ GBs
Screen: 17.3", not a touch screen and not a mirror screen that reflects everything.
Keyboard: must have a the right side numpad.
OS: obviously it must be able to take Linux.
Must be able to play Ark & Dying Light with graphics set to a good level.
CD/DVD drive is a plus

Core I7 4800M in a LATITUDE (not Inspiron!) 6540
Better performance, save money! One does not need for Linux what Windoze requires. Just a sugestion

The way that is advertised and seems good but you said you want to be able to game with it. I wonder if the graphics and design will suit you. With the DVD drive in there it means less space for the board and airflow so heat may become an issue if tasked hard.
I have an Asus similar to these and it works wonderfully. With over a year of continuous use no problems.
I also use an external USB thin profile DVD-RW / BluRay drive so it can be used at home or on the road.

Cd/dvd
A cd/dvd drive isn't an absolute just a preference, and that was a good point, maybe it would be better to let that real estate be used for other things. Thanks. I'll take a look at that link. I found a on asus that looked good but on reading the reviews it has a problem overheating.

Not spam, just saving 5 C-notes I have not used Gigabyte laptops, however (just mobos).

Gegabyte
Pricy but it looks good. I might end up biting the bullet and couch up the money for this one.
