HP ELITEBOOK 8760W display and touchpad issues
Hi there,
I recently bought an HP ELITEBOOK 8760W and after installing Debian 11.3 Firmware I noticed a couple of things:
1. The brightness slider in System Settings is there but does not work at all.
2. The right mouse button below the touchpad also does not work.
Here are some specs:
Display NVIDIA GF104GLM [Quadro 3000M]
Touchpad Synaptics Inc. PnP device SYN0182
I must decide to return it or keep with it.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Mike

I gather that it is a used machine? I did a web search and turned up reviews from nearly a decade ago.
I can't speak to the NVidia issue, but the touch pad issue, with one button that works and one that does not, sounds like a hardware problem to me, which would merit a return.
Just my two cents.

Your tow cents are worth five bucks;-}
Yes, it is from Ebay. I've tried Knoppix as well as Mint and Deb 10, and the button still don't work. Therefore your view of the mouse problem makes sense. If I could fix the screen brightness issue and find a replacement touchpad I will keep the machine. after all it is a 86.00 fixer upper. I've contacted the seller about the mouse problem and suggested a replacement trackpad assembly instead of a return.
In the meantime, I've downloaded the NVIDIA GF104GLM [Quadro 3000M] display driver for Linux and I'll work on that tomorrow.
Thanks and keep you posted

HP ELITEBOOK 8760W follow up brightness issue
After trying Debian, Knoppix, and Mint I found Manjaro had the graphics drivers needed for brightness control. Perhaps Debian 11.3 will include the correct drivers in a future update. In the meantime, Manjaros' it. That's one problem out of the way.
I'm sure the trackpad button is a hardware problem, but I can live with that for now.
Thank you Mr. Bell for your advice.
