Iam using HP dl585 G1 with 4 single core processor, 8gb memory since 2006 march, raid 5 configured for os and data disk.
My problem is OS freezes once a while ( once in a week or once in two weeks or once a month which is not consistant), i need to press power button when it freez.
lights on server shows green when os freezes, no errors, messages logged in /var/log/messages during the hang time.
HP did a HW diag and couldnt find any HW issue but they mentioned my bios ver is quite old and we need to update the bios version.
any tips why does it hang(started this issue from 2009 march)?
if HP engineer update bios will it affect my OS or os boot?
I have a much older box with a similar problem. I have noticed that the power supply plug onto the m/b heats up - a sure sign of power loss. Hard disk won't read, etc. I am meaning to buy/stroke a power supply for it, but haven't got round to it yet.
Update the BIOS - it shouldn't affect anything. I would also add that browsers can find themselves running scripts which crash, and that often causes a near freeze. Can you get a root terminal open, during a 'freeze'?
Can you ssh in? I would start sshd on some crazy port number you have blocked in the firewall so you can try local access when a freeze occurs.
I dont think its a power cable issue, i have dual power cable , when os freez i can see all green lighs on hdd, NIC card link blinks, ILO works but console shows my os freez, i cant ping, ssh, telnet.
I presume this box is a server. From this distance it sounds like a hardware hang, the cpu stopped or digital levels just plainly being read wrong. If you have an engineer coming out to flash the bios, make sure he knows the issue and where to report it. HP may be aware of some issue. An example of something solved that way was (years ago) the amd K6-350 would not run windows 98 without a patch because windows had some timer unsing an instruction which the k6 executed 15 times faster than the pentium, so the timing loop fell over. No dosser on a forum would guess that. Also check if you have been hacked; have you strange files in /tmp, or is the network card outputting when you freeze?
