HP DJ 845c USB stopped functioning - help?

I have a HP DJ 845c USB printer, when I installed Fedora Core 3, it identified itself fine, and printed without any trouble...

Now - for some reason, I can't seem to get anything printed out through it - the only program that I could get to tickle the printer was GIMP, and instead of images, I got weird ASCII style "art" resembling the Image.

I tried removing the printer, and reconfiguring it but to no avail. The jobs seem to vanish from the queue, or never even arrive there without any error messages.

(and yes, I'm sending the jobs to the right printer)

Any ideas?

Is cups running? Can you login into the cups daemon ' http://127.0.0.1:631 '. Is the printer listed there?

As far as gimp goes you need to change the printer driver it uses. Gimp doesn't handle HP very well. When you hit the print option you get a new window that has the printer name on it. Select your printer if it is not the correct one. Then You need to change the Printer Model from Postscript Level 2 to one close to your printer. This is done with the Setup Printer box.

Actually, cups is running, and as I said, gimp is the only piece of software that seems to work with the printer - jobs from kedit/firefox/openoffice etc. seem to evaporate.

CUPS showes me three printers:
Device URI: hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_usb_device_3f0_904_100_-1_TH19L1C2W0SX_
Device URI: usb://HP/DeskJet%20845C?serial=TH19L1C2W0SX
Device URI: usb:/dev/usb/lp0

None of them seem to work - all of them report status "idle, accepting jobs." - but when I try to print a test page, the printer does nothing, and it's status remains the same.

Any Ideas?
