HP DDS2 Tape drive working?

I got my hands on an HP6400 48AL DDS2 drive. I would love to use it for backups on my Intel/Linux box. I know I need to go buy a SCSI card and that is no problem, but how do I get the drive to work? What rpms are needed to control the drive? Will redhat 9 just recognize it?

Any help would be appreciated.

I will let you know how I do in the meantime. I am off to go purchase a SCSI card.

The kernel should be able to enumerate all the SCSI devices, and detect the tape drive just fine. I believe it will be represented at /dev/st0, if it your first tape drive.

You can use tar to write an archive to tape:
tar cvf /dev/st0 <files>

I'm sure you'll want more info than that, but it should get you started...

Thanks

Thanks for the start. I guess I have forgotten that you have to use TAR for all tape I/O. I have never really used tapes before, at least personally. Our backup team does them at work.

Is there a howto and stuff for using tape drives?
