HP 4280 printer not printing

Hi All
I have recently purchased a all-in-one printer HP 4280. I cannot get it to print or scan from the computer. Using windows I have no problems.
Despite configuring using Yast It does work.
Using the command line lpr text.txt and then lpq it shows nothing in the queue.
I am using SUSE 11.0 on Linux 2.6.25.20-0.1-pae i686 with KDE desktop.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Graham

There are many HP 4280, so please say exactly which one, see here:
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=HP

Make sure you have HPLIP installed.

You should also try to configure the printer using the CUPS interface:
http://localhost:631/

If the printer exists try to print a test page, and if you want lpr to work you will need to set the printer to be the 'default printer'.

If you decide to reconfigure it, just remove the old printer, and click 'add printer', at one point you will need to select the option with printer serial number in it, and later it should automatically choose the right driver.

OpenSUSE Printer

With OpenSUSE, I always install system-config-printer, hplip & hplip-hpijs from the YAST install software. Then: Menu> Applications> Utilities> Printing> Printing> Printer> Add Printer and follow the instructions.

For the scanner, install: xsane.
Then you need to add yourself to the scanner group: Yast> Security and Users> User and Group Management> Users> (Edit user)> Details> (Add Group).
