HOWTO post to HCL needed?

Are there any guidelines for hardware compatibility list submissions, such as tools to use, essential information, etc.? Hardware compatibility lists are great but only when the information is sufficiently detailed and accurate. I do not know the process here at LQ because I didn't get far in my attempt to post. The manufacturer was not yet listed. I did submit it (Archos) for inclusion.

For example, I bought an Archos ARCDisk20 (20 GB USB drive) last night based on input at http://qbik.ch that someone had gotten the thing to work on Linux, although there wasn't much detail, so I was taking a chance (and the salesperson said I could return it if it did not work.) I was going to update qbik.ch with my success story this morning, but the post form wanted hex values for the manufacturer and product. I didn't see any explanation on how/where to get these values, so I did not make a post yet.

Any recommendations on where I might go Read The Friendly Manual on HCL submissions?

Thanks,

Lee

Well, I personally think the LQ HCL is fairly self explanatory, telling you what the command to obtain information is. (lspci or similar).

The way to submit an HCL review here at LQ is simply to provide the information that is asked on the submittal form. If in doubt about a particular piece of information, include it. As Matir indicated, I think it's pretty self-explanatory. Regarding requirements at other websites, I'd suggest checking with them directly. -- J.W.

Still a little unclear on the LQ HCL DB

So after I started this thread, I figured out that I didn't have to select a vendor or product from the first pull-down list. I went ahead and posted an HCL entry for the Archos ARCDisk20 USB 2 20GB hard disk I bought and got to work. I see the HCL counter next to my name is incremented to "1", but when I search on Archos or any of the keywords I entered, nothing is returned. Is the submission in a pending area?

I entered the new product at
Hardware Compatibility List > External Storage Devices > Other

TIA,

still RTFM'n ---> :study:

Yes - all submissions are reviewed prior to being posted, in order to confirm accuracy, completeness, etc. -- J.W.

(Thanks for submitting your review. It's much appreciated and helps make LQ an even more useful resource for the Linux community)
