howto install Ati radeon 9800 on Ubuntu 5.10

Hy! Im totally newb and of the many threads ive gone trough i understand very little. I want to install my Ati radeon 9800 card on Ubuntu 5.10

I have downloaded the following fglrx_4_3_0-8.24.8-1.i386.rpm file. I cant open it. The howto i used is the following: edit, cant post urls on my first 3 postings. sorry

It is very likely i used the wrong howto, but i cant find a proper howto of installing an Ati card on Ubuntu. Some threads talk about compiling your kernel right for the right support. None of the commands given work. If there is a package in Synaptic for installing a video card, whats it called, i cant find it.

Can someone give me step by step terminal commands of how to install my ati radeon 9800 card?

Also many posts talk about putting the downloaded or extracted file in /usr/ etc etc. I cant put anything in the map outside home.

Im trying to be as complete as possible on this case but i simply know to little to give a good problem statement.

for example the howto says the follwing:
h check.sh (preform this in the directory to which you unpacked the ATI Driver zip archive.

I have no idea how, i cant unpack the downloaded file and i dont know what preform means. As you can see, if i cant understand the howtos theres no chance for me fixing it....

Can someone help me??

Hy, ive tried to install radeon drivers from the following instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntulinux.org/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

as soon as i run the following command; sudo apt-get install fakeroot gcc-3.4 module-assistant build-essential debhelper
chmod +x ati-driver-installer-<version>.run
fakeroot ./ati-driver-installer-<version>.run

i get the error; no kernel header installed.

I tried to install EasyUbuntu, it has ati drivers included. But i get the following error;

failed to run ./easyubuntu.py as root: Child terminated with 1 status

I tried installing them as root but then i get the following error:

(gksudo:10307): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I also tried kdesu instead of gksudo, but then i get the following error:

kio (KSycoca): WARNING: Found version 79, expecting version 93 or higher.

If someone had the same problems i have please help!!! Im getting very desperate......
