anyone has a simple guide to understand the basics to how to write a driver?

How about LDD3. Seems you can download the entire book - I have the hard-copy.
Also this was an interesting way to pass a day at LCA2005.
If you find this session (er, track - several sessions) on offer at a conference you can get to, I suggest you attend.
