Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

I don't think a video port is going to be both in and out. If it is an input, that would mean you have a video capture card. Is the connector on the video card or the mainboard?
What kind of connector?--eg db9, db15, HD-15, RCA (yellow), S-video, etc.
Here's a "decoder ring", if you aren't familiar with the jargon:

Is the computer currently running with a regular monitor?

well my video card is an integrated nvidia geforce 6100 and the connector is RCA. at least it think its integrated, it doesnt take a pci slot. i am currently using it with a crt. when i try to connect the tv, i unhook the crt plug it in and reboot. also i want this mainly for virtual terminal (just in case its different with x-windows than VT) and its a media center pc so i think it might be input?

I'm not sure I understand. If the connector goes to your crt, then it is not a video input to the computer--it is an output.

What happens when you connect from that connector to your TV? On the TV, you probably have to do something to tell it to display from the video input and not from the antenna/cable.
