Unhappy how to use a secondary sound card, (i think i did something stupid...)

i have 2 sound cards installed in my computer, and i want mandrake to use /dev/sound/dsp1 as the default device rather than /dev/sound/dsp so i went into the sound configuration, and set a custom sound device. The next time i logged in, it told me it couldnt read /dev/sound/dsp1, so i checked the file and there were no read/write permissions set, so i did a CHMOD 666 * on the /dev/sound folder... the next time i logged in there was no error, but there was still no sound, and KMix says my mixer devices are some "Sigmatel" thing, when in fact they are not. (Its a Sound Blaster Live) KMix reported my mixers fine before... was it a stupid idea to chmod these??

Thanks in advance
Matt
