How to Setup the Internet Modem
Ok i just installed slackware 10.0 today... evrything installed right and i can start up slacware... but i cant use the internet... how do i setup mu internet modem to run in slackware? its a cable modem.... i had run slax (slackware live cd) and it somehow automatically detected the modem and i was able to use the internet...
any help would be appriciated |
You don't need to setup the modem. You need to setup your ethernet. To see if it is setup open a terminal and type ifconfig and then copy and paste the output

ok how do i open a terminal? or is it like the command thing? this is the first time i need to do thyis so i dont really know much...

You sound like a definite newbie...maybe Slackware isn't for you.
On the other hand, yes, a terminal is the command line. Your GUI will have a button/menu choice to open one. Then do "ifconfig" at it and paste the results in here. |
ah well i dont really care if you do call me a newbie since i hadnt ever heard it called the terminal since a friend has kinda taught me to use linux but maybe ill use mandrake to learn...

ChriSTP - Welcome to LQ and congratulations on successfully installing Slackware. To answer one of your questions, Yes, opening up a terminal session is another term for the command line prompt. If you are using a graphical desktop environment such as KDE or Gnome, there will either be an icon in the taskbar, or an option within one of the application groups to open up a terminal session.
WMD - I think it's a little harsh to editorialize that a given distro is a poor choice for a person who clearly states that it's his/her very first day using Slackware and is looking for help. Instead, I think it would be better to just stick to the technical question at hand. Thanks. That being said, Yes, posting the results of running the ifconfig command would be a useful first step in attempting to resolve this issue. -- J.W. |
alright well thx i tried the command and it worked i dont really know how to tell if it is setup or not...i was able to take a screenshot and save it to a floppy... here is the pic
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/...P/SNAPSHOT.jpg well im not sure if it is setup or not if it is then how can i fix it so i can use the internet and if it isnt how would i set it up? do i need to download any drivers too? thx for any help in advance |
Try
dhcpcd -r in a terminal and then try ifconfig again to see if you received an ip address. |
hey man thx alot that worked now....
|
Glad to hear that. A couple of programs you'll find usefull are swaret and checkinstall. Swaret makes updating your system easy. Checkinstall will make a package and install it for you. Nice when there isn't a Slack package of a program available.

lol hey man this is not a big problem but i was wondering evrytime i reboot or turn off my computer and start linux again i have to retype the command dhcpcd -r for some reason is this how it should be or is there a way for me to not have to type this is evrytime? not a big deal if there isnt then thats ok thx for all the help again

Take a look in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and see if USE_DHCP ="yes"
fyi you can add programs that you want to start at boot to /etc/rc.d/rc.local for example I've got my firewall script set to start at boot from rc.local You can also run netconfig from a terminal to configure your ethernet to use dhcp |
hey man thx alot that worked great... now all i need is to get my sound to work lol
