Smile How to rename a new hard disk drive

Hi all, thanks for extensive help in getting my scsi drive and controller to work on debian box.

I would like to rename the drive, but when I try to do that in gnome I get an error which says backend doesn't support this. I guess I'll log in as root, but can anyone give me some syntax which allows me to rename a scsi hard drive?

thanks,
Paul

I would boot in RAM with a live CD or from the USB (gparted?). In that case, the HDD would not be booted and the name could be changed with the gparted program?

What do you mean by rename?

You can use tune2fs to change the label of an ext filesystem.

Thanks - what i mean by rename is:

When i use gnome UI and click 'computer' the drive has a name - but it is a default name which i didn't give it. The name is:

'36GB Filesystem 36GB' and i would like to change it to something more meaningful.

Gnome allows to right click the drive and pick rename, but then refuses with the backend doesn't support error.

I think i need to login as root, but am stuck for rename process / syntax

Thanks
Paul

use gparted
and give the drive a name
for example i have a internal drive named " DATA "
it is mounted in /opt/DATA ( udev and fstab )
and shows up as just a folder in dolphin and Nautilus

now i also had a 3 Tb usb drive that is mounted by udev using it's uuid but is listed by the description in the udev rule for it

it displays n dolphin and Nautilus under the "places"
and is in /media

I think that you can just open your "Disk Utility" & just select "Edit File System Label"
In fact I just did it to my LFS partition.
My disk utility is actually called Disk Utility but it should work in whatever disk utility you have.

That's what utils like e2label, ntfslabel, swaplabel are for.
