How to point Slackware 10 to the right sound driver.

llli am running slack 10 with the 2.4.31kernel and i am having problems with it accessing the driver here: /lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.o.gz

when i use lspci it shows 00:08.0 Audio controller: ALi Corporation M5455 PCDI AC-Link Controller Audio Device.

The drivers for the chipset i have are in this directory:
/lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/sound/ali5455.o.gz
i am assuming that the o.gz files are the drivers?

there is also a driver for the 5451(not mine) in its own folder but it is not in the .o.gz format. it just says .o
there is yet another thing in /usr/src/linux-2.4.31/drivers/sound here are a couple of ali5455 .c C compile files.

There are so many things that deal with sound card. i have tried installing alsa but it did not work and i just cant figure out which file i need to direct it to and how to direct it.

If this helps when i am booting up it says unsupported chipset agpart try unsupported_agpart_1 /lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpart.o.gz

that is what makes me think that it is trying to use a different sound driver but i am not sure how to redirect it. thanks for any help guys.

here are my system specs if you need to know:
amd opteron 144 at 2.6ghz
2gb gskills hz ram
asrock dual-sata2 motherboard
7600gt (i need to install this as well)

-edit- i just rebooted and it said that it could be caused by IRC conflicts if that helps any. what format should drivers be in?

1. agpgart is the driver for your agp socket for your graphics card
2. try running "alsaconf" as root and see what happens
3. if 2. doesn't work, chances are you haven't installed alsa correctly, re-compile and install alsa again - or just use the alsa pckages supplied with slack:
Code:
upgradepkg --reinstall /path.to.cdrom/slackware/l/alsa*
