I found some posts with the similar sound card problems on this site.
They are quite helpful.

I am using Mandrake 8.2, with kernel 2.4.19-35mdk. I would like to
re-compile the kernel but I just can't find the source. It's not in
/usr/src/linux

for alsamixer: failed to open mixer #0/#0: No such device
for aumix -p +
aumix: error opening mixer

Anymore help for the problem? That's the idea of Linux?

do this ---> #uname -a

see the kernel version....

I dont think u have the kernel-source installed in any case ...

see if u have the kernel-source RPM package installed for the running kernel [The kernel source must match the kernel your running. ]

do this --->

#rpm -qa | grep -i kernel-source

the above command will give u all the rpm's which have the word kernel-source in them ...

look for the above mentioned file name --->kernel-source-2XXXXX

IF U DONT HAVE A KERNEL SOURCE

download the kernel-source-rpm's for ur running kernel and install it

#rpm -ivh kernel-source-2XXXXXXX.rpm

that shud do...

and install the rpm...
