how to know if linux need all compiled in block device?

I have a compaq presario cq60-300eo and I'm compiling my own linux kernel. dmesg give
Code:

Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 2.6.0)
at bot time and I don't think my computer uses this driver. How do I know what needs to be compiled in to the kernel?
