Exclamation how to install a videodriver ( nvidia) exactl


hello this is my first post
ive got a question i mean 2
first how can i install a video driver for nvidia tnt 64 on opensuse 10.2
and shockwave
i opent a shell and entert sl and the rest that was on the instructions but i got the message not found i think that i have to compile but don`t know how please tell me the exact way to do it please cozz my 3d is not working now and shockwave give`s an error that it won`t install
and how should i install a programe or game can i do it via yast
btw can i download the nvidia driver by doing a update
and if it`s not working at all can some do it for me via opendesk??

I'm not sure what instructions you followed. Did you follow the specific Suse instruction from the nvidia site that tell you to use Yast, Use "sax2 -r" for X.Org configuration, etc?

problem almost solved

yes i`m getting the error that x server is running and i must close it but i don`t know how to close x server maybe you can tell me
and thank you for the reply

I'm sure there are lots of ways of doing it, but I generally run the command line anyway, so the simple ways escape me

One way is to edit /etc/inittab, look for the line

id:5:initdefault:

and change the 5 to a 3. Reboot, and you'll be in command line without X running.

Install the driver. Change that line back, and reboot.


You may also be able to simply type

init 3

from a root terminal session, but I'm not entirely sure if that works (try it before the above solution)

Thumbs down dont know what i`m doing wrong

i tried the init 3 then it turns into runlevel 3 but stil the program says i`m running x server i also tried ctrl alt f1 f2 but the samew error contineus i`m doing something wrong btw i logged in as root i`m not sure if suse 10.2 is the right choice for me

When you get to the grub bootloader menu, select opensuse (if it is default, you may need to hit your arrow keys to stop the boot process) and type "init 3". This should appear in a line called boot options (or something like that).

The system should now boot to runlevel 3 and you can run sax2
