How to Increase the Maximum Volume ?

Hi,

In my pc, I have compiled alsa into kernel, and it is running... However, i need to crank up the volume to max in my pc as well as my 500 Watts speaker set to hear a feeble sound...

It seems like the volume is scaled down in my PC (it was fine with the recent OSS driver, which is not opensource)

The same phenomenon is found in recording as well...

I have looked up the C files related to the modules... But, Dont know what to do inthose... Is there any kind of amplification factor involved that i need to hard code?

I am pretty much new to kernel hacking

Any help will be appretiated as I have only Linux in my PC...

Thanks for ur efforts.

Run alsamixer. With alsamixer you can see what mixer channels you have available. Both PCM and Master will affect the output volume (as will the CD channel if you're playing directly from an audio CD).

I checked everything... Ran alsaconf, and alsamixer, then, also tried aumix... Everything is unmuted and is in 100% volume.

Are your speakers plugged into the right jack on the soundcard? Is the volume knob on the speakers turned up? I'd suspect a basic (and easily overlooked) physical cause if you've already confirmed alsaconf and alsamixer

Yes... they are fine cos, with the same setup, the OSS driver worked. However, there was a problem with that driver, as it was not compatible with other mixers, other than the ossmixer. Also, the sound recording is at twice the speed... and it is not open source... So, i installed alsa. Hence, the hardware part is fine... Alsaconfig and alsamixer are also setup... When i reduce the volume in the alsamixer, the volume dies down, which means it is working. But the maximum volume itself is so small that its hard even to realize it.
