How to get SUSE installation DVD to read from secondary slave DVD drive.

The computer is a dual boot machine that is running Ms XP and SUSE 9.3. In order to load the DVD I have changed the boot disc order but this only reads the primary slave CD disc and not the DVD. Is there a way round this problem.

Disk configuration

I think you might have to physically change the way you drives are connected. What I would try is setting up both your CD and DVD drives on one IDE port. It slows down the hard drives if they are connected on the same cable as a CD/DVD drive anyways, so it is better to keep them separate. Maybe by putting the DVD drive jumpered as master and the CD as slave, the bios will detect the DVD first.

There is the possibility that the bios is too old to detect the newer DVD drive, in which case you may want to check out the motherboard manufacturer's website and see if there is a bios upgrade available. Just be careful, as you can toast your computer doing this, so read the instructions first.

Hope this helps,

Harry

Also, mark on a piece of paper what everything was set to and what cable went where to prevent not getting it back together if need be.

Not sure of mb brand.

Along with changing the boot order, many motherboards allow for the selection of the drive to boot to. might want to see if you can change the boot cdrom. If not then will have to revert to the previous suggestion of changing the cdrom with the dvd, or simply disconnect the cdrom.
