How to get a terminal from Linux Mint before total freeze

Hello,

I have Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64-bit installed. I want to purge the nvidia card driver with sudo apt-get purge nvidia*.
My problem is the system isn`t stable enough for me to even get a terminal window open. In 2 seconds, the whole system freaks out and I have to hold the power button to restart.
I tried doing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace but that only logs me off and doesn`t stop X.
I would like to get to a terminal and somehow be able to type sudo stop service mdm

Thank you.

Hi...

At the GRUB menu before Mint starts to boot, do you see the "recovery mode" option? If so, select that and then choose "Drop to root shell prompt."

Let us know how it goes.

Regards...

What exactly does this mean? Does it freeze up? Are you sure you don't have a hardware problem?

Play Bonny!

that sort of behavior can also occur when you're using the wrong nvidia driver for an nvidia card. been there.

I can boot to a root shell prompt from recovery mode. From there I try to type sudo apt-get purge nvidia* but it gives three error messages which I can`t remember right now. (One of them mentioned something about /var/lock I think!)

I am trying to purge nvidia to get to the nouveau driver.

Thanks.

Hi...

Having the exact error messages will be helpful here. When you get an opportunity, please write them down and supply them in your next post. Thanks!

Regards...

Grab your phone, take a picture of the error messages. Post the photo.
Also as root you don't need sudo.

Ok. Here are the error messages after typing sudo apt-get purge nividia*:

W: not using locking for read-only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: unable to write to /var/cache/apt
E: the package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

Thanks.
