Question how to find compatible motherboards for dell poweredge 840

I have a dell poweredge 840. It has 8G of ram, which is the max for the system, and a quad core xeon processor. Lately when I need to upgrade I just get a new computer (ie the PE 840 was replacing a PE 800)

Then I started to remember my 386/486 days when we'd just upgrade the motherboard.

How do I find, for sure, which motherboards my case and power supply can handle. Also what things do I need to look out for? (ie I remember going from 486 to Pentium Pro the power supply connectors no longer fit)

Dell typically has proprietary systems with proprietary Motherboards.. Finding an off the shelf replacement will be difficult at best, and more then likely almost impossible.

You will run into this issue with most Major OEM systems (Dell, Compaq, HP, Sony, etc..) All the Dell Desktop systems I have here are closer to a BTX motherboard than an ATX style. The BTX mounts on the opposite side of the Case for one... the Dell Servers I have are all custom for sure, with Riser board for the cards to fit in, etc..

Contact Dell for guidance.

If you build your own system with standard parts, upgrading the system, replacing the motherboard etc.. will be fairly easy.
