How to determine scan/refresh rates of laptop monitor?

Most external monitors have a manufacturer/model name on them than can be looked up... laptop screens obviously do not.

I have an eMachines M6809 with NO documentation provided on the specifics of hardware. Is there a place where I can look up these horizontal/vertical numbers, or is there some way to determine this using software?

No way of safely running X without this knowledge, correct?
