you need to give more details of your current configuration on your router and the RH9 box.

but most likely your router is acting as a dhcp server, edit your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (on the redhat box) to look something like this:
Code:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
then run ifup eth0
or restart your computer.

if this doesn't work then post more details of your configuration

If your LINUX system is connected to the Windws XP system. Get a hub or a switch hub and connect it to the router. Then connect both your Windows XP and your LINUX system to it. Then you don't have to run through the Windows XP system. This will make it easier to setup your network. You can still go through the Windows XP system but you have to run DHCP and internet sharing services first on it.

I am using a 4 port SMC router. 1 port for my winxp, 1 port for redhat9 and 2 unused.

i have got the following already

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
onBOOT=yes

but still doesnt work.

there are 3 other lines there which are
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
TYPE=Ethernet

it trys to determine IP info for eth0 but failed.

under my network configuration, the eth0 device is inactive but i cant activate it. No idea why also.

You do not need to start a new thread. You just need to e-mail a moderator so they can move this one.

The information to connect to the internet:
IP address
Gateway address (aka your router)
Atleast two DNS address (can be found from your router)

On your Windows XP system type ipconfig /all in the command line. Then write it down. Its a little easier to set up a static IP address than a dynamic IP address.

Under linux type /sbin/ipconfig
