How to choose a 64-bit system?

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of going from a 32-bit machine to a 64-bit system, in large part because I need more than 2 Gb addressable memory, in the kind of processing that I do. Probably much more. I probably also need a dual processor machine.

Can someone point out a link for what to look for in a new machine? Is there a link with reviews of existing hardware somewhere?

Best regards,

JME

For the list of hardware, http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php

I've never had a problem with Gigabyte and Abit boards, but here's the general way to shop
1. Find a 64bit board with dual processors.
2. Write down all chipset info from the manufacturers website.
3. Cross reference those chipsets to LQ's Hardware compatiblity list and other HCL's
4. Google "Model of Board+Distro" or "Model of Board+linux" and see if anyone reports good/bad things
5. Post the system here and let some of us pick it apart.

Thats basically all I can tell you.
Other advice
Stay away from boards with a huge amount of onboard stuff. It they have a stripped down version of the board, pick it.
