how to change the tty at which the computer logs in??

when i boot the computer, it directly takes me to tty1, where i have to type the command gdm, and then only it takes me to graphics... when i'm at tty1, the key combination ALT + CTRL + F7 doesn't take me to graphic mode... so how do we set it to give tty7 by default??
