Unhappy How To Change Refresh Rates from Command Line?

Im Chris and I have recently moved to Red Hat 8.1, but I am having problems getting actually to use Linux because of my old shitty monitor. I installed at a friends house on his nice big new 19 inch something monitor, and mine will not work with Linux now, and i was wondering if i could just change the refresh rates from command line since i cant get to linux to change them. Ive tried installing new drivers, but they arent working for anything. thanks for the help!
Chris

Try doing it this way:
1) Get all the specs for your video card and Monitor.
2) Boot into runlevel 3 (append " 3" to your kernel arguments).
3) Login as root and run "redhat-config-xfree86". This will allow you to configure your hardware.
4) Enter/select your hardware and the specs it supports
5) You can run "Xtest" to test your config - if it does not show you a desktop with a message asking if the config is OK then wait 10 seconds and it will exit automatically.
