How to auto mount cdrom in run level 3?

I just discovered that you have to manually mount devices when you operate in run level 3 (console mode). How can I have the cdrom automatically mounted when someone inserts a cd? Thanks!

i believe if you change noauto to auto in /etc/fstab that will do it

Arodef 08-19-2004 08:07 PM

Thanks. Any downsides to changing it?

/etc/fstab

change /etc/fstab
cdrom noauto ...> auto
then reboot

Not really downsides to it. Just gives all users who have physical access to the computer the ability to use the cdrom. Where Windows lets anybody do anything unless you tell Windows not to, Linux wont let anybody do anything unless you tell linux to. For security reasons.

Setting auto in fstab will not make your CDs mounted whenever someone inserts one. It will only mount it when there is a CD inside the drive when the system boots up.

It is possible to have CDs (and also USB storage devices etc.) mounted automatically using kernel 2.6 + udev + hotplug + hal + gnome-volume-manager.

Wow, that's a big downside. Thanks for the info. I'm forced to stick with 2.4 for now so I guess I'll have to do the manual mounting of the cdrom.

I've got RedHat 8 running here with kernel 2.4.18-14, and it used to automount cds (in gui mode, RL5) -- until I turned it off.

For CentOS 5.2

edit the /etc/sysconfig/autofs

uncomment the
MASTER_MAP_NAME=auto.master

I also uncommented

BROWSE_MODE="yes"

Then you should get /misc/cd as the cd drive
after service autofs restart
