How to assign functions to 5 button mice?

I know this question has been asked plenty of times, but after searching the forums, I couldn't find the answers I needed. I have a microsoft intellimouse optical with the 5 buttons (4 plus a clickable scroll mouse) And while RH9 will allow the use of this mouse plus its scroll wheel impecably, it will not allow you to use the side buttons. They are used as 'Back/Forward' by default. It would be nice to have these available in linux, especially for web surfing. If anyone has a solution, I'd like to know.

well

I took a shot at it, but just messed things up. I don't understand the commands enough to run around careless in root like that. I'll be glad to try if I know what I'm doing though.
