i got dell optiplex 620 with builtin x600 videocard, connected 2 monitors and i have no idea how to configure them to show one desktop. right now second screen shows duplicate image from the original monitor. please let me know how do i setup a multiple monitor configuration.
i'm running fc5 and control center does not see the second monitor.

ok, i was able to enable dualhead using the display utility under the system but it still does not let me do anything with the second monitor. it keeps mirroring the first one. even if try spanning desktops option it still only projects the first monitor image onto the second monitor image with messed up resolution.

Your graphics card may not support it. However, here is a good dual-head output article by Red Hat, focused on Fedora Core 4: http://www.redhat.com/magazine/014de...res/multihead/

Enjoy

Oh, an ATi X600 should support dual-head - sorry, I must have glanced over that in the original post.

Did you install the ATi driver properly? Are you sure it works? Type in 'fglrxinfo' and it should say 'ATI' - that means it's installed.

Apart from that, I'm not sure how to help you.. Have you tried something like Xinerama?

hi, tried to install the driver, but my x version seem to be over what the driver supports. mine is 7 while the latest the driver supports is 6.9.x
i forced the driver to install but still have no luck with dual monitors.
the command you adviced to run does not exist.
xinerama was mentioned in my xorg.conf so i would assume i had it tried
i even tried to use 2 videocards, but apparently dell does not allow using builtin videocard when external pcie card is present. pci card did not work as well. it was visible in the dualhead window option, but when i tried to select it and restarted X, X didnt start....
i'm getting lil frustrated over this matter but will keep on trying.

correction: found fglrxinfo and run it:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.2)
in my understanding this is not the output you should get when ATI driver is installed?

Nope, the install must not have worked.. It's still using MESA It would say ATI instead of Mesa if it had worked.

You could always try removing X and installing 6.9.x, and then installing the ATi driver?

Sorry, ATi has left me unimpressed with the service.. That driver is a half-hearted attempt. Which is why I tend to go for nVidia cards - they are much better supported in Linux

i'm an nvidia fan myself, but this is my machine at work and it came preequipped with the ati card so i have to suffer with it....
what is the cheapest nvidia card that supports the dual screen?
it also seems to be the issue with the dell motherboard and bios as well. they went pretty restrictive on this particular model for some reason.
