How Do I Set Up An Internet Connection?

As much as I hate to say it, I use dialup. It works under Windows but I can't seem to do it in Fedora.

When I go to "Internet connection wizard" I put in the phone numbers, the username and password, but it said "No Modem Found" when it started.

What I want to do, is make Fedora dial for the connection every time I open Firefox and Evolution, and in addition I would like a shortcut to the connection if that is possible.

The modem type is a BCM V.90 56K Modem.

if you go to the modem section on this page: http://oboc.ucdavis.edu/Marik/inspiron/ you will find information on the drivers for this kind of modem.

ok use scanmodem script to find out what you have: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz

then you have a choice of smartlink: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/

or a connexant chipset: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/

that page is useless... doesn't detail anything about actually configuring the modem....

basically while you can configure a modems settings, you need a driver to connect to the modem hardware itself. looking around, the suport for the modem appears to be utter rubbish. there s a driver from dell here... http://www.modemsite.com/56k/bcm.asp but it is ooooooolllldddddd

that modem can be one of two chipsets. look at my last post. you can use the linuxant driver or the smartlink driver. it has a script which i just posted above that lets you determine the chipset. the website was not rubbish it had all this information in the modem section like I said.

actually what that site had is a different modem, i also have the same problem as jlacroix and im starting to go nuts looking at pages that claim to have the answer
now then how you got to that site i have no idea but it seems you need more explicit information like the id for his 14e4:4212
second the driver source on dell has long since disappeared
anyone who can give real info on how to get the BCM v.92 modem (which linux automatically recognizes as BCM v.90) running on say mandrake 10.0 would recieve my eternal gratitude

what does the scanmodem script that was listed above list the modem as? BCM modems if I remember right are just gorified cionexant modems. The linuxant driver should work.

the linuxant driver of coarse does not work: the actual modem name is GTW v.92 56k modem; BCM or broadcom makes the chipset hence its being part of the name that linux gives it
trouble is broadcom quit modems a while ago, and dell carried on long enough to get something that works in kernel 2.4 but not in 2.6
anyway as far as i can tell there is no way to get this modem to work in a kernel 2.6 environment

well i have now also tried the smartlink driver which i was pretty sure wouldn't work from the beginning but i gave it a shot, heres the deal and i dont mean to be nasty but unless you can back up your assumption with an actual success please keep the annoying waste of time activities to yourself as maybes just clog down a thread with nothing and might as well be spam (my apologies for nastiness but im really tired of this)

I am just trying to help. I am taking time out of my schedule doing research trying to help. I don't consider that anything resembling spam.
