Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

How do I read disc and space used information on a DVD?

I have a problem and perhaps you can shed some light. Under Windows if I load a DVD the system will almost spontaneously report disc size and space used. The only way I know of under Linux is to "du -sk" which takes up to 10 minutes on a fully loaded DVD. "df" does not seem to suport cd's or DVD's. Since windows reports this information so quickly it must be stored on a separate track somewhere. Do you know of a utility or a method to read this information? Thank you in advance.

df will print the usage on every mounted filesystem. Just insert the dvd, mount it, and do a df command. But notice that even with a 10MB sized dvd, df will report 100% use, due to the way the iso9660 filesystem reports itself (I mean, it doesn't take into account the total capacity of the dvd media).

A data disk, whether it's a CD or DVD, needs to be mounted first. As an example:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/<mountpoint>
Naturally, this is only for illustrative purposes; you would need to substitute your system particulars as appropriate.

Once it's mounted, as bruno buys indicated, the df command (or df -h) will tell you how much space is being used. Note that in the case of a CD-R or DVD-R, this would be a moot point, as you can't add more files to those disks once they've been burned. You'd need to be using an RW blank that hasn't been finalized yet in order to store additional files on it. -- J.W.
