How do I play MIDI files?

I run Red Hat 8.0 and have a Creative Soundblaster PCI 128 Soundcard. Unfortunately I cannot play MIDI files, as Linux cannot detect my midi device. can anyone help? My output volume is also very low... how can I increase it?

Also, can anyone suggest a good mpeg player/codec?
