Hi, thanks to all for all your help. At this point, since I have now downloaded the photos from my camera, I'm calling it quits, but not before I give a few more snippets of info.

I've looked up the camera documentation.

The document "Windows XP - Product Compatibility" at http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/im...ndowsXP_en.pdf says:

IMPORTANT:
(1) Windows XP formatted media may not be used with the camera. Please format media with the camera before shooting.

The "FE-130/X-720/X-740 FE-140/X-725 Advanced Manual" (p. 29) says:

1 MEMORY FORMAT (FORMAT)
Formatting the internal memory or card
All existing data, including protected pictures, are erased when the internal
memory or the card is formatted. Make sure that you save or transfer important
data to a computer before formatting the card.
• Make sure there is no card inserted in the camera when formatting the internal
memory.
• Be sure that the card is inserted in the camera when formatting the card.
• Before using non-Olympus cards or cards which have been formatted on a
computer, you must format them with this camera.

I also tried using gpart to "guess" the existing partitioning on the 2GB card. It came up with:

leopardi@cheeze:~/test/testu01-runtime$ gpart /dev/sdb

Begin scan...
End scan.

Checking partitions...
Ok.

Guessed primary partition table:
Primary partition(1)
type: 000(0x00)(unused)
size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
chs: (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(2)
type: 000(0x00)(unused)
size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
chs: (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(3)
type: 000(0x00)(unused)
size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
chs: (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(4)
type: 000(0x00)(unused)
size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
chs: (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Recall that sfdisk said:

leopardi@cheeze:~/test/testu01-runtime$ sfdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 1016 cylinders, 65 heads, 62 sectors/track

sfdisk: ERROR: sector 0 does not have an msdos signature
/dev/sdb: unrecognized partition table type
No partitions found

My guess is that using gparted to partition the xD card will have one of the following outcomes:
1.1. The partitioning will fail and the camera will no longer read the xD card.
1.2. The partitioning will fail but the camera will be able to reformat the xD card.
2.1. The partitioning will succeed but the camera will no longer read the xD card.
2.2. The partitioning will succeed, the camera will be able to reformat the xD card, but once this is done, Linux will not be able to mount the partition via the Logic Gear MultimediaDrive.
2.3. The partitioning will succeed, the camera will be able to reformat the xD card, and once this is done,
Linux will be able to mount the partition via the Logic Gear MultimediaDrive, and be able to read photos, etc.

It is only in case 2.3 that my original goal will have succeeded. In cases 1.1 and 2.1 I will be out of pocket by the cost of the xD card, about $60. Since I have now downloaded the photos from my camera, I'm calling it quits.

Thanks again, all.
