Question how do I handle a SDT-10000 tape?

We have a conpaq server with a Sony SDT-10000 tape device in it. I want to copy some stuff into tapes with kdat, but right now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to make the scsi subsystem to "recognize" the tape tha has been loaded into the device.

What are the steps I have to follow?

This is the information I have:

Code:
$ sudo cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00
  Vendor: COMPAQ Model: SDT-10000 Rev: 1.12
  Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
$ sudo cat /proc/driver/cciss/cciss0
cciss0: HP Smart Array 5300 Controller
Board ID: 0x40700e11
Firmware Version: 1.72
IRQ: 24
Logical drives: 1
Current Q depth: 0
Current # commands on controller: 0
Max Q depth since init: 163
Max # commands on controller since init: 195
Max SG entries since init: 31
       Sequential access devices: 0

cciss/c0d0:       54.62GB       RAID 5
The information provided by cciss is about the RAID mounted there, not the tape.

Here is an old how-to for scsi tape; http://nic.phys.ethz.ch/readme/80

It has been a long time since I used one, but I think the tape should be called /dev/st0. You can try "mt -f /dev/st0 status" to see if this is the correct device.
