how do I get my SiI3114 sATA "visible" on my system?

Hi,
few days ago I recieved my new system including new SuSE Linux 9,0 AMD64.
My Sys-Conf is:
2x AMD Opteron 242
GeForceMX4 Graphics adapter
Tyan K8W S2885 board w/ AMD8111 rev 3 and SiI3114 sATA onboard controller
512MB DDR-RAM ECC reg. for each CPU
WDC 20GB IDE hdd
Sony DVD ATAPI-drive
Maxtor 160GB sATA on sATA channel1

everythings fine, ok i dont have any sound yet, but thats not really whats teasen me.
I recompiled the SuSE Kernel 2.4.21 to a smp Kernel fitting to my system, but still I can't see my sATA, even tried driver from Silicon Image, but they just give you binaries, not released with GPL and for Kernel 2.4.19. thats doesnt work.
Also kernel 2.6.0 doesn'T show my sATA bus.
And I also tried a Bios update ... nothing, got anyone still a tipp for me?

Thx

In the 2.6.0 kernel, you need to enable SATA support. I don't know if your controller is supported. You can find the setting under SCSI low-level drivers.

In the 2.4 branch, you need to patch your kernel with the libata patch at
http://www.cs.kernel.org/pub/linux/k...garzik/libata/

I'm not yet sure what the difference between the two is but I got it working with the libata1 for my Intel ICH5R sata controller

I don't know if the kernel Silicon Image driver works with the 3114 version of the chip, but it supports the 3112/3112a chips at least. It is available under IDE/ATA devices in the 2.4.22 and later kernels.
But since you have tried the 2.6 kernel I believe the current kernel Silicon Image driver doesn't work for the 3114. Use a traditional (parallell) ATA disk for now until support for the 3114 has become better.

On a related note, I must say the Silicon Image SATA support is pretty bad right now. On my Barton 2800+ system (Abit NF7-S revision 2) with a 160GB Seagate SATA disk I get less than half of the performance compared to my old Athlon 950MHz on an Asus A7V board using a 80GB Deskstar with 8MB cache.

NF7-S throughput is about 25MB/s while it's an excellent 59MB/s on my A7V. The A7V has the tried and true Promise 20265 ATA100 controller which provides very good performance even on "old" systems like my A7V setup.

hi,

i'm using Mandrake 9.2 right now and I have a Maxtor SATA hd that I want to use. As such, I'm upgrading my kernel up to 2.6. I've looked in menuconfig and selected SATA support but I can't seem to find the option for Silicon Image 3112 support. I did enable the Silicon Image support under IDE/ATA but i'd rather use libata. where do i enable this?

thanks
