How come dvd player sound works but cd player doesn't?
When I play a dvd in xine my sound works great. The dvd is on /dev/cdrom. My cd writer is on dev/cdrom1. I put an audio cd in and I get no sound at all. I have done aumix and made sure the sound volume was up and it is. I have done the sound configuration and checked all the levels. I am using fedora. My sound card is ac 97. Any suggestions to fix it?

Yes. I dual boot and it works in my windows xp. So I know there isn't a hardware issue. It has to do something with the settings for the cdrom or the driver itself.

two suggestions, add your user to the proper device group, or edit /etc/fstab as follows
change /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
to /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
note: make sure you edit the proper line as you have 2 devices.
good luck.

No I haven't tried any other players. But I know I should have sound from a cd if I am getting sound from my dvd player like you were saying.

Hardware could be an issue.
What CD player application are you using? Kcd needs an audio cable but the latest version of xmms does not. However, XP does not need an audio cable.
I looked at the xine website but couldn't find out if its audio player uses digital audio extraction.

Also it will act like it reads the cd but when the cd player comes up and I hit play nothing happens. It won't let me mount either even when I am using su user. It says mount: not a directory
