Please help

Please help me
I searched alot in Mandrake and in my distro CD for Kernel Source but nothing.
Please tell me about my kernel source. Is this problem occured in every Mandrake 9.2 or only in my case. Without it I can't install my Modem driver and the latest Alsa Driver.
Please help me, If can't then give any idea or guess.
Please........

motub 05-30-2004 06:30 AM

What is the problem? That you can't install your kernel source? This is not a problem in every Mandrake 9.2, it is a problem only because you have that terrible Internet connection and so don't have ready access to the thousands of programs (including the kernel-source) which live generally in the Mandrake Internet repositories; otherwise I'd have had you configure your Software Sources Manager ages ago using Easy URPMI.

It's also only a problem because you happen to need the kernel source; most users do not, and so do not notice that it's not installed.

Secondly, you do not need to install any ALSA drivers when using Mandrake 9.2; Mandrake installs ALSA automatically and uses it by default. If I was you, I would not worry about using "the latest version"-- if it's working, why mess with it?

I am also not sure that you need to install these special modem drivers (what are you accessing the Internet with if your modem is not working?), but I'll help you if you are sure that you need to.

Assuming that you are using the Mandrake default kernel (2.4.22-10mdk; please do a uname -r in a terminal to confirm that this is your currently running kernel), the source can be found at

ftp://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/Linux/Mandr...10mdk.i586.rpm

(Taiwan seemed to be the closest mirror to your location).

When you have them installed (all that will happen is that the RPM will unpack the kernel source to /usr/src/kernel-version, and make a symlink from the new folder to /usr/src/linux), use the instructions in the README for the modem drivers to compile and install the drivers.

Oh, and I was wrong, I did find some (older) 2.6 kernels in the /contrib repository, but imo you are not really experienced enough to upgrade a 2.4 series kernel to the 2.6 series, and there's no reason for you to do so. Get what you've got working and then you can think about messing with the kernel if you really feel that you must.

Thank u very much
I need exectly good links for the kernel source and u have provided me that. Now I am downloading that and hoping that the Downloading will be completed on day after tomorrow. Becouse the ISP is getting much slow speed and I am just working on 0.5 to 2.5 kb/s so, Although I am downloading it from DAP (Download Accelerator Plus). It is a long issue and useless to discuss it here.
I am browsing net from Windows XP. And I need to Install Alsa 1.0.4 becouse I need better support for my Soundcard (In my openion it will effect it, What do u think?). I read some where in ALSA 's documentation that 1.0.1rc1 got better support for Intel 18x0 or Sis 7012. While My Mandrake got its 0.9.0 version.
As I am using net from XP. In Mandrake Modem is not working. While lspci shows it as detected. So when I tried to install it , it was asking to give the kernel source. So after Installing full kernel source I will try for it. But one problem is there. I read the modem driver documentation and it told me that it is compatible with kernek 2.4.8 to 2.4.20 and no more. Do u remember that after installing 2.4.31-9 in Redhat it gave me compilation error and I told about it but I will try to Install it.
My Modem is PCTEL CNR Modem and I am using pct-0.9.7-9 Driver on it. After it no more drivers are available for it so I am very worry about it.

motub 05-31-2004 10:49 AM

Well, that does sound like something to be worried about, but there's nothing you can do but try and hope for the best (or buy another modem, if that's possible).

In any case, it looks like you'll have to compile the ALSA drivers from scratch if you want to use the current version (not a big problem since you will have the kernel source already installed):

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/drive...1.0.5a.tar.bz2

ftp://linux.sarang.net/mirror/driver...-1.0.5.tar.bz2

ftp://linux.sarang.net/mirror/driver...-1.0.5.tar.bz2

ftp://linux.sarang.net/mirror/driver...-1.0.5.tar.bz2

ftp://linux.sarang.net/mirror/driver...-1.0.4.tar.bz2

ftp://linux.sarang.net/mirror/driver...-1.0.5.tar.bz2

ftp://linux.sarang.net/mirror/driver...b-1.noarch.rpm

(if you need another alsaconf; you may not)

Links are from the ALSA Project Asia mirror, except for the first one, as this bugfix driver was just released today and hasn't made it to the mirrors yet.

Good luck.

mir_sheely 06-03-2004 06:32 AM

Hi Motub,
I downloaded it today. The Download took more then I was aspecting. Actually there was not so much problem in my ISP. There is problem in my Modem. The data comes from the ISP is 3 to 5 kb/s but my Modem doesn't recieve it. So I will now buy a new Modem. Please tell me the name of some Modems which are fully compatible with both i-e Windows and Linux?
I have Installed my Kernel Source and Installed the Alsa 1.0.4 drivers, which I already got, and now they are working it. (I still didn't follow ur links due to slow downloading speed) but thank u very very much for them.
I reinstall Mandrake becouse day before yesturday I installed Lindows 4.0 and it destroyed it's Bootloader. I tried to install its Bootloader by booting it into rescue mode but it was unable to do this. In my previous Installation the 3D acceleration was not available but Visualisation Plug-Ins in XMMS were working nicely. (Becouse the games were not working properly). Now in this Installation the plug-ins are also not working properly. Don't do any thing for 3D acceleration now becouse I will discuss it later, but now tell me why I the plug-ins are not working properly now?
First of all I would like to get connected to net.
Thank u very very much.

motub 06-03-2004 06:35 AM

Any external serial modem should be Linux compatible. I don't have a modem, so I can't help you much there. I would suggest you search these forums or the Hardware Compatibility page of whatever distribution you're using this week ;) for more information.

I hope that you will discuss your 3D acceleration issues in a new thread, as this one is getting completely confusing to anyone who might read it.

mir_sheely 06-03-2004 06:54 AM

What do u mean by
"externel serial modems"
does it not include externel USB modems?
Becouse external USB Modems are available here easily.

motub 06-03-2004 07:08 AM

An external serial modem connects to the serial ports on your computer.

I did not suggest an external USB modem (which are available pretty much everywhere "easily"), because then your modem performance will be dependent on the USB support of your particular distribution, and both USB support and specific support for individual brands of USB modems can be spotty, from what I see around the forums.

However, as I said, I don't have a dialup modem, I don't use a dialup modem currently, and I have never used a dialup modem under Linux, so I am not the best source of information on modems of any sort (since the broadband modem I connect to through the LAN is connected to and operated from a Windows PC).

mir_sheely 06-06-2004 06:21 AM

OK Thanks

I searched here for externel modems and they are too much expensive here i-e about 4000 rupees to 6000 rupees (30 to 40 US dollars). But it doesn't matter, I will search for some good internel modems which are easily compatible with Linux.
For my 3D acceleration I will start a new thread but before that I would like to ask some short questions here.

Now u can see that the DRI is not installed and if it is installed then it is not loading.
What should I do now? Will u suggest me to add entries of DRI in this file e-g load "dri" in the load module section?
If my DRI is not installed then kindly please give few links for downloading them in the rpm package.

mir_sheely 06-13-2004 03:33 AM

I got Success.

Hi motub! hope u will bw fine.
Now in the end I chose ZOLTRIX SMART COBRA Lite 56K V92 Modem. It contain Conexent Modem Chip, and Linux detected it well. As it was the best Modem in my City present in the market. Mandrake Control Centre was unable to configure it and connecting to net. I could not find the kppp. (I was looking for it in the internet section in my Distro CD). I wrote my problem here but nothing. Then Yesturday I wrote it on linuxpakistan.net and they help me in finding kppp in my distro CD. Actually it was in KDE section. Ok it is not subject to discuss.
I worked hard for enabling my 3D acceleration but all in vain. All those package which I have downloade from
www.winischhofer.net/linuxsis630.shtml
are not archiving. Both terminal and file roler are unable to archive them. I also started a new thread on that topic. So I stoped working on it. It is almost useless.
Now with new Modem I can work on net with 4 kb/s to 8 kb/s. It is much better now.
Now if u some sites which have good software for Mandrake 9.2 kindly tell me.
Ok take care.
Thank u very much.

Go to Easy URPMI, and follow the instructions there to add external repositories to your Software Sources Manager. Because you're on dial-up, make sure to check the "Use compressed index, much smaller than normal, with less informations" checkbox.

The instruction "Type this in a terminal as root" is performed as follows:

1) Open a terminal.

2) Type su and hit enter.

3) Type the root password at the Password: prompt and hit Enter. The password will not be echoed to the screen, even with stars, so type carefully.

4) If the password was correctly typed, the prompt should change from a "$" which indicates user access, to a "#" which indicates root access. All commands typed into this terminal window from this point on will be performed as if root had requested them. If this does not work (and you have correctly entered the root password), the problem is that the user is not a member of the wheel group; go to the Mandrake User Management tool in the Mandrake Control Center and add the user to that group, then try steps 2 and 3 again.

5) Select and copy one line of output from the Easy URPMI page (from urpmi.addmedia to synthesis.hdlist.cz) and paste that line into the root terminal using CTRL+Shift+V. You should see the repository being added before you are returned to the prompt. Repeat for all repositiores listed in the Easy URPMI Step 3 output.

You should now be able to open RPMDrake (Mandrake Control Center=>Software Management=>RPMDrake (Install Software) ) and see a great deal of software available for download and installation. You will see even more if you change the filter at the top of the dialog from "Mandrake Choices" (the default) to "All Software by...." (I usually use "by group", but you can choose from several options).

To install any program, check its checkbox, and the program and all dependencies will be downloaded (or pulled off the CDs, which will be requested by Mandrake complete with ejection of your CD tray) and installed. Be warned that large programs with many dependencies will obviously take a long time for you to download, so keep an eye on the details before clicking the "install" button.

You may also get alarming-looking messages telling you that there was "no public GPG key found", and asking if you want to install anyway; if you are installing from Mandrake mirrors, you can safely install, and get the GPG keys later to stop this message even coming up.

GPG signatures are encryptions on the RPMs to ensure that the file has not been tampered with. The packager signs the final RPM with a private key and with a public key, then makes the public key available to the public (you and me). RPMDrake compares the key on the RPM with the key on your GPG keyring (the little keyring in your system tray when you run the Mandrake Control Center), and gives this error message if the two do not conform (in this case, because you don't have the key on your keyring at all, so RPMDrake has nothing to compare the RPM's key with).

Mandrake's public GPG keys can be found in the /base/ folder of the Mandrake mirror that EasyURPMI gave you as output for Step 3; if you put the url (without the "with synthesis.hdlist.cz" part) into a browser, and go up a level in the FTP site that will be displayed, you will see the /base/ folder. Go into that folder and you will see 3 "pubkey" files; select them and right-click to download them to a safe location. The public key for the PLF repository is right in the folder given in the Easy URPMI output, so you will see it if you type that address into a browser. Download that, too.

Once you have downloaded the keys, open a terminal, su to root (as above) and then use the cd command to browse to the folder that you saved the files to. Then do an ls to display the names of the files in that folder for easy reference for the next step.

Type gpg --import <keyfile_one_name> <keyfile_two_name> <keyfile_three_name> <keyfile_four_name> (that's why we displayed the file list; you should be able to type in the names correctly since you can just look on the terminal screen to see what they are), and hit Enter.

The keys should be added to your keyring, and you should get no more key-related errors when installing software (unless there's really something wrong with the key).

Once you have RPMDrake up and running, you should have no further problems with installing software, as there are thousands of packages available for Mandrake on its mirrors.

Any other problems, please start a new thread as previously suggested.

Good luck, and enjoy using Mandrake (Mandrake 9.2 is one of my favorite distros)!

mir_sheely 06-14-2004 09:27 AM

Hi motub,
I have done it. In the begining I was little bit confused but when I performed ur instruction step by step I easily understood them. Now my Mandrake Package Installer contains a lot of software and software updates. Few of them are too much large, but no problem. Now I am very Satisfy with my LINUX and enjoying it but whenever I thought about my 3D acceleration I becom sad becouse I can't play 3D games on it which are an important part of entertainment. But perhaps one day will come when SiS will realese their official Drivers for LINUX.
Now I am realising that I should close this thread here. I have learnt many thing from it and the all cradit goes to u. You are the only person for 3 months who has been helping me constantly. You are GREAT really GREAT. You have done much much for me and I can not give u any thing in return.
Once again thank you very very much.
Thanks to those who read our conversation.

motub 06-14-2004 12:03 PM

I'm really glad you've got the major part of the distro working. It's been a heck of a journey, but at least we got somewhere pretty nice. You're very welcome for the help.

I do think you should start a new thread for the SiS/3D acceleration issue though; it seems to me that it should be solveable, but I don't have a very new motherboard, so I don't know how to solve it. But with over 50,000 people registered to these forums, surely somebody will know something.

Have fun! Mandrake 9.2 is a very good distro, and there's lots you can do with it, even without 3D acceleration (for the moment).

:)
