how can i override the hardware manager

when i installed my modem in mandrake 8.2, i could not find my modem. I unpluged it and restarted my system and when the system loaded, (detecting new hardware) a black and blue screen came up and ask me if i wanted to install my modem. I did something, not sure what, and got the screen again. I picked to wrong option and now my modem dont work. how can i get the screen again. I tried to unplug the modem and redetect it, but that did not work. under configure/hardware i cant get that to work either. the driver works fine, just cant detect my modem.

What kind of a modem is it? If it is a serial external or pci/isa internal try different /dev/ttyS*

pci 56k voice/fax modem using the conexant driver for linux. took two days to get it to dial at all and then make booboo and now it wont dial at all. I tried the change setting thing, still nothing. How do i get my modem , not the driver, the modem it self, to reinstall it self after i told the system to ignore it. I cant get the same screen at boot up. it said it was detecting new hardware and went to a screen where it wanted to know if i wanted to leave thi device installed? or remove the device? or ignore the device. I chose ignore device by mistake and now it wont install my modem no matter what i do.

Edit:
for get the above, tried something and now need to reinstall linux. how do i wipe out linux so i can reinstall it. i could just del the partition but seems like there has to be a better way to get rid of it. thanks in advance
