Hotplug of external hard drive to USB 2.0 port affecting other mounted devices

RHEL Server version 5.2 running on Proliant DL 580 G5 Rack Server with two HP Modular Smart Arrays
WD external hard drive My Book Studio edition II

A colleague of mine had for a long time been trying to connect the hard drive which is supposed to be ready for operation with mac OSX to the USB port of the red hat server. I wasn't around at the time, but he said that he got "read-only file system" error message when he tried to copy any data from the red hat box to the external Hard drive. He finally got it to work by reformating the file system to FAT.

However, recently, the external hard drive has been connected to the server and we have tried writing files to the modular smart arrays we have gotten similar "read-only file system" errors. A reboot of the server solved the problem.

I have searched for a solution on the web and have picked up some info that has given me some ideas on what may be going on (I am absolutely no Unix expert). It seems basically like something is wrong with the details of the hot pluging of the hard drive to the usb port since: 1) the first problem described above seemed to be caused by the fact that it was not correctly setting the file system, and 2) the second problem seems to suggest that the hot pluging of the hard drive goes and affects the way in which other external hard drives are mounted (changing them to read only).

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem?

What is causing the error?

Does anyone have a good solution?

I have seen that it is possible to turn the hot plugging off in the preferences. Could this be the solution together with a precise mount command issued at the command line with precise details of file system and read/write for the external hard drive?

Thanks for the help.

Tim.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

What did the RH support people have to say about your problem?

You should make sure that no one is using the hdd first. What happens when you attempt to umount the device? Post your '/etc/fstab'.

You should setup the filesystem with a native filesystem such as ext2/3/4 or whatever flavor suits you. 'FAT' is not the best choice for operations that you want to use the hdd for.

As for the hotplug stuff, you should be using udev to take care of those issues.

Found the answer to my problem on the web after a bit more googling. NTFS-3G seems to be the solution.
