Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Hopefully a quicky modem question....

I went out and bought a creative serial modem. Used it on xp and works fine (so I know it works). When I first boot up with it connected a screen appeared asking to configure the device. It saw it as being a creative modem blaster (which it is). Happy with that I proceeded to set up the connection when I got to the desktop. When it probes for modems it doesn’t find any. I went into the hardware browser and looked under hardware but it didn’t show any serial devices (showed usb and ect.). I'm guessing since it’s a serial device that it’s on ttys0 (if I’m totally off forgive me I have only been using Linux for a few hours now). I continue through the setup using ttys0 but it only shows it as being a generic modem, so I think I’ve done something wrong or it really isn’t seeing the modem after all. I have tried to connect even though it shows generic modem and it doesn’t work. No lights light up on the modem either as if it were querying it.

Hopefully it’s an easy fix and I’m just missing something here.

Dont be scared, the fact that it doesn't find your modem shouldn't be a problem: Red Hat 9.0 didn't find my external modem either but by using a generic driver works just fine.

Just go ahead with Main Menu/ System Tools/Internet Configuration Wizard choose modem and go with generic driver if it doesn't detect your modem.
