Homebrew box for Linux dev: Intel or AMD64?

Building a box dedicated to Linux development; focusing on Eclipse/Eclipse plug-ins, and Postgres.

Looking out about a year, is there any significant advantage to using an AMD64, or should I stick with a cheaper Intel? I'm looking for mid-range performance - does not have to be cutting edge.

Thanks!

Welcome to LQ! If you are looking for mid-range performance, I'd suggest just sticking with a standard Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon chip. Eventually 64 bit will become the new standard, however, today it's in its early stages now and most likely, unless you had specific 64 bit apps to run and/or build, you would not enjoy any particular advantage over a regular chip. Good luck with it regardless of your decision -- J.W.

64's going to stick around for servers and game enthusiasts (who aren't getting the performance enhancement they thought they would). J.W.'s right, stick with the standard 32 bit chips for now unless you're planning on running a server... and then only if you want more than 2 gigs of RAM.
